Hot Off the Press: Mid-Atlantic Coatings USS Stennis Renovation Project

May 28, 2021

USS John C. Stennis

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) has recently made news as it is undergoing its complete mid-life nuclear refueling and overhaul. The USS Stennis is the USA’s seventh Nimitz-class nuclear-powered Supercarrier, the largest type of aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. The ship has had a great 25-year history. One of her most notable moments came in 2011 when a E-2C Hawkeye departed her deck marking the end of naval support for the United States mission in Iraq named Operation New Dawn.

The overhaul of the ship started at the end of April and is expected to take four years or approximately 2 million hours of work! During the renovation, the carrier will have her nuclear reactor refueled, over 2300 compartments modernized, technological upgrades to the propulsion system, flight deck and many other advancements. After the overhaul, the ship will be ready for another 25-years of duty.

Bullseye Activewear is honored to have a role in such a monumental project as the company recently provided embroidered jackets, screen printed t-shirts, banners, and bags to the workers of Mid-Atlantic Coatings (MAC). The MAC team will be working on the first phase of the ship’s renovation which includes surface preparation, painting, and refinishing. The merchandise that was printed at Bullseye Activewear’s headquarters in Brunswick Ohio will be dispersed to MAC employees and subcontractors who will be hard at work on the aircraft carrier at her new home in Norfolk, Virginia.

The merchandise supplied by Bullseye includes a Carolina blue t-shirt with the MAC logo and the tagline Surface Preparation or Preservation team on the front left chest in black. That same shirt features a sleeve printed with the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 moniker. The back of the shirt includes a colored version of the MAC logo which has illustrations of four different types of sea vessels. There are 11 additional companies subcontracted to work on this phase of the project and all of their logos are included on the back of the t-shirt as well.

A matching blue, nylon, drawstring bag printed with the MAC and Sherwin-Williams’ logos will be given to each worker. Cleveland based Sherwin-Williams will be supplying the specialized marine coatings that MAC will use as part of the USS Stennis restoration.

Coincidentally, this is the second time Bullseye Activewear has worked on this sort of project. The company produced similar items for the refueling and overhaul of the USS George Washington (CVN-73) during the summer of 2017.

Happy Memorial Day and here’s to another 25 years of service for the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74)!
