Branded Merchandise People Want to Keep

Branded merchandise and promotional products selected for usefulness, quality and durability

Research Suggests Useful, Durable and Feel are Worth the Investment

Most businesses don't have an unlimited promotional products budget. Whether you're buying items for a trade show, an employee program, a customer thank-you or a community event, there is eventually a decision to make about where that money will do the most good. What do you buy? And when you decide, do you buy more items so you can reach more people, or spend a little more per item in hopes that what you give away will have a longer life?

Recent research from the Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) offers some useful guidance. In 2026, PPAI surveyed more than 3,400 U.S. consumers about the branded merchandise they receive, what they do with it and, importantly, what makes them decide something is worth keeping. The findings make a strong case for looking beyond cost per piece when evaluating your options.

According to the research, 42.7% of consumers say they keep and regularly use branded merchandise they receive. Another 44% use it occasionally. So the numbers are good if you’re looking for long lasting results.

When PPAI asked for the primary reason consumers keep a branded item, 55.2% said it was useful in daily life. Another 21.4% pointed to high quality, while 11.8% said they kept something because it looked good or was stylish. Smaller percentages cited the item being thoughtful or meaningful (6.1%) or simply coming from a brand they liked (5.6%).

The Case for Quality

This gives us something to go on. More than three-quarters of consumers identified usefulness or quality as their primary reason among multiple choices for keeping an item. PPAI went a step further and asked what makes merchandise feel high quality. Durability was cited as key by 70.4% of consumers, followed closely by design at 65.2%, materials at 58.2% and functionality at 44%.

Put all of that together and the research provides a pretty good shopping list. Instead of simply asking what you can afford to put your logo on, it makes sense to consider whether an item will be useful, whether it's built to last and whether it looks and feels good enough that someone will actually want it. Using those criteria, several familiar promotional product categories become particularly strong investments.

A good shirt or sweatshirt can be worn dozens of times and stay in someone's closet for years, making apparel a natural fit with the PPAI findings. Durability, design and material are three of the strongest characteristics consumers associate with quality, and all three can be improved by choosing a better garment.

Design matters, too. PPAI found that 38% of consumers say boring or generic design can make promotional merchandise feel cheap or forgettable. A comfortable, well-made shirt with a design people actually want to wear gives your brand a much better chance of staying in regular rotation.

Insulated Drinkware: Part of the Daily Routine

Branded merchandise including a tote bag and embroidered capsPPAI found that 73% of consumers use branded bottles or tumblers daily, making quality drinkware one of the clearest opportunities for repeated brand exposure.

The key is choosing something that can compete with the other cups already in someone's cabinet. Good insulation, a dependable lid, comfortable size and clean design all matter. Your logo only gets seen if someone chooses your tumbler when they leave the house.

Bags: Give Them a Reason to Carry It

With 55.2% of consumers saying usefulness is the primary reason they keep branded merchandise, a good bag starts with purpose. A reusable tote, backpack, cooler or laptop bag should match the audience and solve a real need.

Quality still matters. PPAI found that more than 60% of consumers say poor materials or construction can make promotional merchandise feel cheap or forgettable. Choose a bag that's useful enough—and built well enough—to be carried again.

Portable chargers, charging cables and other tech accessories can provide frequent interaction with your brand, but only when they work reliably. PPAI reports growing demand for better-designed, retail-style promotional products, which makes quality especially important in this category.

Don't choose tech simply because it looks impressive in a catalog. A simple product that solves a common problem and works every time is more likely to stay on someone's desk, in their vehicle or in their travel bag.

The Case for Buying Better, Even If It Means Buying Fewer

When promotional budgets tighten, PPAI found that 60% of buyers reduce quantity first. That's worth considering when the alternative is sacrificing the quality that makes a product worth keeping.

Buying 500 inexpensive items isn't necessarily a better marketing investment than buying 300 that people will use for months or years. Cost per piece matters, but so does what happens to the product after you give it away.
